Want To Bring A Touch Of Class To Your Decor?

Molding and trim are what bring a room its character and appeal. And some DIY enthusiasts find this type of molding installation and carpentry a rewarding challenge, however, others will consider it a colossal pain in the neck. Below are a few pro-grade tips and tricks that will help you succeed if you decide to tackle the job yourself.

Choice of Material

Consider the different materials for your interior  molding installation. Solid wood trim can be milled to have crisp angled profiles, and the natural wood grain could be stained to bring out its grain. This is readily available and reasonably priced, however, the material can shrink and swell with any changes in temperature and moisture. Stained wood also requires considerable carpentry skills when it comes to installing, as gaps and nail holes in the joints cannot be easily disguised with caulk and paint.

For painted trim, consider MDF, which is a composite material made from sawdust and resin. It is light, and low-cost when compared to solid wood. MDF however, can be dented and nicked easily, however, minor gaps and defects when it comes to installation can be caulked and painted.

Another paint-grade alternative is polyurethane, this is more stable and lightweight than wood, however, it mills, cuts, and fastens in the same way. It is softer than wood, however, this enables it to be manufactured in elaborate, plaster-like profiles.

Size Matters

Trimwork that is not sized properly in proportion to a wall’s height will have a negative effect on the decor. For instance, crown molding that is too thin will make a room feel top-heavy, whereas molding which is too large can make the ceiling look like it’s coming down into the living space.
